What Is Reiki? A Beginner’s Guide to Energy Healing in North Wales

You may have heard the word Reiki and wondered what it actually is. Is it massage? Meditation? Something spiritual? The answer is a little of all three — and none of them entirely. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that has been growing in popularity as more people seek holistic approaches to managing stress, pain, and overall wellness. Here is what you need to know.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. The word itself breaks down into two parts: ‘Rei’ meaning universal, and ‘Ki’ meaning life energy. The practice is based on the idea that a practitioner can channel universal life force energy through their hands and into the recipient, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki is practiced fully clothed, on a comfortable massage table. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different areas of the body, using specific hand placements to encourage the flow of energy. Sessions typically last 60 minutes.

What Does Reiki Feel Like?

Everyone’s experience is different, but many people report feeling a deep sense of calm and relaxation during a Reiki session. Some notice warmth or tingling where the practitioner’s hands are placed. Others see colors or imagery, or drift into a peaceful, meditative state. Occasionally people experience an emotional release as tension and stress are gently cleared.

At Whole Body Yoga Studio, our Reiki sessions are enhanced with soft music, crystals, sage, and palo santo to create a calming and sacred space for your healing journey.

What Are the Benefits of Reiki?

While Reiki is not a substitute for medical care, many clients report meaningful benefits from regular sessions, including:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Relief from chronic pain and inflammation
  • Greater emotional clarity and grounding
  • Enhanced immune system function
  • Support for trauma recovery
  • A deeper sense of spiritual connection and inner peace

Who Can Benefit from Reiki?

Reiki is suitable for almost everyone, regardless of age or health status. It is particularly beneficial for people experiencing high levels of stress, those managing chronic pain or illness, individuals going through emotional challenges, and anyone looking to deepen their mind-body connection. Because it is so gentle, Reiki is also safe during pregnancy and for the elderly.

What to Expect at Your First Reiki Session at WBYS

When you arrive for your Reiki session at Whole Body Yoga Studio, your practitioner will begin with a brief conversation to understand your goals and any areas of focus. You will then lie fully clothed on a comfortable massage table. After a short grounding meditation, your practitioner will begin the energy work, moving gently through a series of hand placements. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to allow energy to flow freely throughout the session. Most people leave feeling deeply relaxed, lighter, and more centered.
