What to Expect at Your First Yoga Class in North Wales

Taking your first yoga class can feel a little daunting. What should you wear? What do you bring? Will everyone be more flexible than you? These are questions we hear all the time at Whole Body Yoga Studio in North Wales, PA — and the good news is, there is nothing to worry about. Here is everything you need to know before you step onto the mat for the first time.

What to Wear

Comfort is the priority. Choose clothes that move with you — form-fitting leggings or shorts work well, along with a fitted top that won’t fall over your head when you bend forward. Avoid overly baggy clothing. You will practice barefoot, so no special footwear is needed.

What to Bring

For your first class, all you really need is an open mind. If you have your own yoga mat, bring it. If not, we have mats available to borrow for $5, and mats for sale in the studio. You may also want to bring:

  • A water bottle — hydration is important, especially for more active classes
  • A small towel
  • Any props you own (blocks, straps, blankets) — though we have these available for everyone

Which Class Should You Take?

If you are brand new to yoga, we recommend starting with one of our beginner-friendly classes. At WBYS, great options for first-timers include Gentle Yoga Flow, Yoga Basics, and Restorative Yoga. These classes are designed to introduce you to the foundational poses and breathing techniques at a comfortable pace. Check our Class Descriptions page for a full overview of everything we offer or visit our class schedule to see what’s up next!

What If I'm Not Flexible?

This is the most common concern we hear — and the most unnecessary! Yoga is not about being flexible; it is about becoming more flexible over time. You do not need to touch your toes to walk through our door. Every pose has modifications, and our instructors are trained to help you find the version that works for your body right now.

What Happens During Class?

Most classes at WBYS begin with a centering exercise and breathing practice to help you settle in. You will then move through a sequence of postures guided by your instructor, finishing with a period of relaxation known as Savasana. At the end of class, your instructor will offer the traditional Sanskrit greeting ‘Namaste’ as a symbol of gratitude and connection.

After Your First Class

It is completely normal to feel a little sore in the day or two after your first yoga class — you have used muscles in ways they are not used to. Drink plenty of water, rest when needed, and try to come back within a few days. Consistency is where the real benefits of yoga begin to show.
